The best first hunt is one with plenty of action, simple rules and a good chance of success. These five fit the bill.

1. Squirrels
Long seasons, generous limits and squirrels nearly everywhere there are hardwoods. Squirrel hunting teaches stalking, patience and woodsmanship.
2. Rabbits
Cottontail hunting is fun alone or with friends and a beagle. Brush piles and field edges hold rabbits through the winter.
3. Doves
The September dove opener is a social hunt with lots of shooting and a great meal afterward.

4. Spring turkeys
Calling in a gobbler is one of the most exciting moments in hunting, and spring weather is comfortable for new hunters.
5. Youth deer days
Many states hold youth-only deer hunts before the regular season, giving young hunters a quieter woods and a mentor at their side.
Whichever hunt comes first, take hunter education, read the regulations and bring a mentor. See Planning a First Hunt.
